Christmas is just 60 days away

I was in a shopping centre yesterday, the 16th OCTOBER, and all the Christmas decorations are up already! All with that, every store has their own variations of Christmas Carols. I do think it’s too much too soon but it is a reminder that Christmas is just 60 days away!

Please don’t leave me your clutter!

Please don’t leave me your clutter!

A few month’s ago I worked with a young woman who had lost her mom, and needed to clear out her home. She had called me in as her time was limited, and she needed to get the house sorted as quickly as possible. Even though she had visited her mom on a weekly basis, and been inside her home regularly, she was not prepared for the onslaught of stuff in cupboards, under beds, in boxes in top cupboards and the garage, along with paperwork and memorabilia in all corners of her mom’s home.

Moving house is a stressful time! So once you have made the decision to move, take time to think about everything that needs to get done before the moving truck arrives. Make lists and have a schedule of all the things that need doing and by when. To help you with this process here is a schedule I share with clients to help them make this transition as easy as possible.

These are Mom’s memories, not mine!

These are Mom’s memories, not mine!

Recently my siblings and I moved my mom into a small room in a lovely retirement home.

WHAT DOES BEING ORGANISED MEAN?

What does it actually mean?

organised
ADJECTIVE

1. Arranged or structured in a systematic way.
1.1 Able to plan one's activities efficiently.

Being organised is not the same as being tidy – but rather being able to find things in the least amount of time.

For those of you who missed it, this is an organising article that appeared in the June issue of Garden and Home magazine. I had such fun with a colleague, Saskia Wild and the Garden and Home team in the home of a lovely client.

It’s exciting to show off what can be done with a little bit of sorting, decluttering and organising!

I hope you enjoy reading the article as much as we enjoying putting it together. Even more, I would love to know that the article inspired you to get sorted too!

Do you use your favourite things every day?

I have quite a few favourite things! Pieces I like to look at, things I enjoy using. Wooden ornaments in my study where I can see them all the time, gorgeous antique champagne glasses I use every time I drink bubbly! Wonderful platters I inherited from my mom-in-law that are used at every dinner party, a favourite shocking pink pashmina, bought in Cambodia on a trip with my sister, that I use often when the weather is cooler.

What about you? Do you use your favourite things? Do you enjoy them regularly?

Or do you find there is so much stuff that you don’t get to use and enjoy your favourite things?
Are your favourite items packed away for fear of damaging or spoiling them?

Why have favourite things if we don’t enjoy them? Come on, why settle for less?

So, here are 5 areas in your home you can start with:

Kitchen: Declutter by letting go all the items you don’t really like, no longer work for you, are broken or chipped. Start using your grandmother’s china, your favourite wine glasses and gorgeous table cloths and napkins tucked away for a special occasion. Every day should be a special occasion!

Clothing: Donate your duplicates, the jeans that haven’t fit in a long time, and those impulse buys that you have never worn. Keep those items that make you feel good, that you love to wear and wear them often. No more “I have nothing to wear” days!

Jewellery: How much jewellery do you have? How much do you wear? Weed out the pieces that you no longer love or wear. Pass on to family members and friends, or donate to a worthy cause. Wear the pieces you love!

Ornamentals: Ditch the vases, ornamentals and other stuff out on display that you really don’t love. Display and use your favourite pieces, and enjoy your home!

Toys: do you find your children play with the same toys all the time? Those are their favourites! Go through their toys with them and donate those they no longer love. If there are toys they can’t part with, pack them away for 6 months and revisit then.

Life is short – let’s enjoy our favourite things every day!

Are You Ready For The Festive Season?

Here come the holidays!

I don’t know about you, but this time of year is hectic as we all try to get things done before the holidays.

Instead of being a time of fun and relaxation, the holidays threaten to turn into a nightmare. Over the years I have found ways to keep the festive season just that, FESTIVE!

Here are 4 tips to help you enjoy, rather than dread this time of year:

One: Plan & Prepare:

Spend some time thinking, planning and preparing. What worked and what didn't last year? Make a list of everything, I mean EVERYTHING you have to do until the end of the year and allocate time to the tasks – and start today!

Two: Simplify, Organize & Manage:

Break your long list down into smaller lists, be specific and get the What, Who, When and How Much down for gifts, shopping, dinners, lunches and outings, activities and trips. If it feels like too much – it probably is. Now’s a good time to be realistic and delete the things that would be nice, but just aren’t possible!

Three: Act:

Now you have a plan that feels comfortable and do-able, get your shopping trips in early and plan for contingencies – a bit of extra time to do something you’ve forgotten or for taking a well-deserved breather. It’s also great to tick off and cross out as you get things done!

Four: Your Festive Season Mantra:

  • I will share the load and not try to do it all myself;
  • I will avoid overspending, over-catering and overindulging;
  • I will keep things simple and pace myself;
  • I will be strong enough to say NO when I have to;
  • I will give myself the time to be in the right space to enjoy it all!

Do you have any great tips to stay calm and relaxed these holidays?
