Has there ever been a better time to get sorted and organised?

“It’s a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack” Lyrics by 4 Jacks and a Jill way back in 1968, but so pertinent right now. When we come out of this, and we will, we will have learnt lessons, we will have identified the important, we will have regrouped and reconnected. So let’s get ready…

As we hunker down and get used to this extended time at home, many of us have lists of things we want to do, things we need to do, things we have put off, and things we have never had time for. I am thinking that decluttering, sorting and organising are strong contenders.

With that in mind, and for all of you who are keen to get their homes in order, here are 12 tips to get you going on the right track:

  • Clutter builds up over time – don’t expect to get rid of it all overnight!
  • Start with a plan of action. Make a list of the rooms and spaces you are going to tackle
  • Set aside uninterrupted time. I would recommend a 2 hour session each day will in lockdown. I also recommend you do it first, and then have a relaxing afternoon.
  • Do not do too much at once. Sometimes you feel like you could go all day, but don’t! This is physically and emotionally stressful and you will need the breaks.
  • Have boxes labelled GIVE AWAY, THROW AWAY, PUT AWAY, STORE. You could take it a step further and allocate where give-aways are going to - so children, friends, family, charities etc.
  • With every new space work from one side to the other, top to bottom, things you can see first, then the cupboards and drawers. Clear all the visible stuff before you open a cupboard or drawer.
  • Don’t start a new area before you have finished the previous one.
  • Touch each item and make an immediate decision –
    • Do I want it?
    • Do I need it?
    • Do I have a better one?
    • What is the worst thing that can happen if I don’t keep it?
  • Identify what’s MOST important to you
  • Decide what you can live without and let it go
  • Be ruthless understanding your new lifestyle moving forward.
