10 simple ways to stop being so busy, slow down and enjoy your life

“Sorry, I cant, I’m too busy!”

“I’m so busy!”

“It’s hectic at the moment”

“There’s no time!”

“I don’t have time!”

Busy, busy, busy! Everyone is busy. We are always hurrying from one thing to another. There is never enough time for everything we want to do. It seems like a merry go round that we can’t get off.

Well, we can, and we should. For our health, our wellbeing, our families, our friends, ourselves. I know I want to. Do you?

Here at 10 simple ways to stop being so busy, slow down and enjoy your life:

1. Stop multi-tasking. I have never believed in multi-tasking, and still don’t. Start single-tasking. Focus on one thing. Do one thing at a time and then move on to the next. Take your time. Do it properly. Do it once.

2. Plan your week. I sit with a cup of tea and my diary on a Sunday afternoon and plan my week. I check my appointments and meetings, plan my menu, and schedule in down time for walking the dogs or coffee with a friend.

3. Always be early. Make sure you give yourself enough time to get where you need to be. Factor in traffic, and plan your route ahead of time.

4. Write things down. Whether you use a good old paper diary and pen like I do, or an app on your phone , make notes, organise your thoughts, note contact details, and make lists.

5. Eat slower. Don’t eat and drink on the run. Take time to sit and eat. Taste the coffee. Enjoy the tea. Take time to lay the table, or at least use your best crockery and cutlery. Use your favourite mug. Take out granny’s tea cup and saucer.

6. Breathe. Literally, stand still and breathe. Thinking about your breathing. Breathe deeply. Stop for a moment and focus on your breathing.

7. Go for a walk. Around the block, to the field or the park. Take the dogs, take a friend. Go alone. It could be 5 minutes or a lot longer. Don’t take your phone, don’t think about work.

8. Get plenty of sleep. Have the best bed you can afford. Make your bedroom a calm and inviting space. A space to retreat and rest. Don’t watch television in bed. Try to go to bed at the same time every night, and get up at the same time every morning.

9. Cut back on your possessions. Get rid of things that you don’t love and don’t use. Less stuff means less cleaning, less tidying, less worrying.

10. Enjoy the simple pleasures. Take the time to appreciate the little things. My little pleasures are the smell of coffee in the morning, an early morning walk, a chat to my daughters, dogs on my lap, a real fire on a cold night, a good book. Oh, there are so many more!
